SEVEN DEADLY LANDING PAGE SINS

Fellow Internet Marketers, I’m Dylan Young and I’d like to thank you for taking the time to read my consumer report. I decided to create this document to help my fellow internet marketers on how to craft a better converting landing page to maximize the effectiveness of their solo ad spend. I’ve been doing solo ads for quite some time now and I’ve learned that having a quality landing page makes the whole solo ad experience much more rewarding.

In a moment, I’ll go through some of the most common mistakes I’ve noticed when it comes to landing pages. I hope they serve you well.

Sin #1 – Headlines & Value Propositions Are Flawed

A headline is the first thing a prospect sees. Having a bad headline can definitely impact conversions. Its a common problem. The wording impacts the thinking which then impacts the results. The headline communicates the value proposition of your website, it describe exactly what your prospect is getting himself into.

Now what the heck is value proposition? According to our friend wikipedia “a value proposition is a promise of value to be delivered and a belief from the customer that value will be experienced”…..Ya exactly!

Basically we have to ask ourselves what makes us different from our competition? Why are we better than them? If we can’t come up with something, we’re in trouble!

We have to find that one element that makes us better, that distinguishes us from everyone else. I like to think about this one…take your time…don’t rush into this one because it really is, what sets you apart. Think Apple and quality products. That was their whole thing, we build quality products, we don’t ship out junk.

Once we have that, we have to make sure that we EXPRESS it, we can’t be shy about doing it. The landing page needs to have different elements that will communicate that value to the prospect as well.

Tip: Your member benefits should be in your customers eye path and not off to the sides or footers. Those areas should only be used to support the value, e.g testimonials or images that re-emphasize your proposition and that reinforces your value. 

 

Sin #2 – NOT KNOWING THE CUSTOMER

Customer motivation is the most important element to your conversions according to Meclabs.

Example: No one is going to buy a “make $100 day” ebook if they are looking for car insurance.

So we really need to UNDERSTAND the prospect. Understand the why and the what. Where is he coming from? Literally and figuratively. I always try and get into my prospect shoes . If you do that your conversions will benefit greatly.

If your prospect is coming from a specific keyword don’t send him to a generic page, send him to a specific page highlighting those keywords. This has always worked wonders for me.

Match your landing page to the motivation of your ad.

Tip: Dont be afraid to be specific, remember, adequacy is the enemy of excellence

Sin #3 – TOO MUCH “NOISE”

I see many landing pages with a ton of noise. What’s noise? I see it as any unnecessary information a prospect doesn’t need to see or fill. Minimizing the “noise” factor is one of the most effective ways to help with conversion. One of the most important question you can ask yourself in order to reduce “noise” is what am I trying to get from my prospect?

If its just an email, eliminate all other fields such as names, salutation, phone number etc. Display only the fields you NEED

Also, one key is not to have elements on your page compete with themselves. If a page has the objective to sell something, don’t have elements that compete with that objective.

Landing pages should strive for a simple layout. Having a linear process and having your page follow your prospects eye path is crucial. Eliminate as many columns as you can and don’t have the prospect jump around from one place to the other – think linear!

Also, having too many colors on your page can hurt conversions. Different colors are difficult to read and disrupt the eye flow. Remember : More “Noise” = Less Conversions

Sin #4 – OPTIN FORM ISNT ABOVE THE FOLD

This could have been Sin #1 as it might be the most crucial to me. Have your email form above the fold. Dont let the prospect have to scroll down to enter their information. This just kills your conversions. I’ve used those fancy heat map softwares to test this out and surely enough, 85-90% go for the top optin box as opposed to one at the bottom of the page. I like to include this in here because I see many customers of my Solojunky.com make this mistake. I always make a point of telling them.

Sin #5 – INCENTIVE HAS LITTLE VALUE

Having a great incentive for your prospect will benefit you in the long run. Adding value to your incentives will benefit you ten fold. I really don’t want to be cheap with my offer. Deliver quality products and your prospects will love you. Get noticed as someone who brings great value to people. The more good will you give them, the more likely they are to spend money on your products. Think of the long term value of your customer!

Tip: Have a good e-cover/graphics. Dont have your e-cover look like it was designed in 1994, it really doesn’t inspire confidence to your prospect.

Sin #6- NOT TESTING THE PAGE

Not the most fun part of the process but so critical. The last thing I want is to send all my traffic to a newly built page and have no tracking setup. Your first effort might not be the best one, so remember to TRACK your progress. I also have different versions of my pages e.g headline, layout,call to action. I always do A/B testing. Tracking my progress is fundamental. The more information I have the more I can tweak it and help with conversions.

As a rule, I never delete my landing pages, I make a conscious effort to keep all of them so I can track their progress. If for whatever reason after a few tweaks the page still doesn’t convert, best to scrap the page all together and start from scratch.

Sin #7- NOT SCOPING THE COMPETITION

Theres a bunch of multi-million dollar companies spending a ton of money on analytics and professionals to tweak and test their landing pages. So why not take advantage of it? Disney is probably the best when it comes to selling timeshares to people. So if I ever wanted to get into the time-share business, going on a Disney sales pitch would be the very first step I’d take. Disney has spent MILLIONS in tweaking and perfecting their sales strategy so it would be silly of me not to take advantage of it, especially when its FREE!

So go check out the competition, see what they are doing and learn from it. Speak with friends and see what is working for them. Remember, good artists copy; great artists steal. This was a line that Jobs used all the time, if its good enough for Jobs, its good enough for us!

Tip: strive for quantative statements as opposed to qualitative e.g 24 hours support vs best customer support
